Man Arrested for Bomb Threat on Lucky Star 'Birthplace'

On Saturday, police in the city of Satte north of Tokyo arrested a 22-year-old unemployed man named Yōsuke Ida for allegedly sending a letter threatening to blow up the former home of Lucky Star manga creator Kagami Yoshimizu. According to the authorities, the suspect said that he did not intend to actually set off an explosion, but thought there would be an uproar if he sent a threat.

The Satte City Chamber of Commerce and Industry renovated the home after Yoshimizu moved out last May and reopened the home on March 28 as the "birthplace" of Lucky Star. The "Kimagure Studio Yoshimizu Kagami Gallery Satte" ("Whimsical Studio Kagami Yoshimizu Gallery Satte") now features a recreation of the fictional home of Lucky Star's main character, Konata Izumi, including her cousin Yutaka's room (pictured at right) and other displays.

According to the police investigation, Ida mailed a letter on March 30. The letter reportedly said, "I am going to blow up the site recreating the heroine's room from the Lucky Star manga on April 25." In response, the chamber of commerce and industry beefed up the security staff on Saturday. Ida comes from the central Japanese city of Takasaki, which is north of Satte.
